Urology is
a rapidly developing specialty in the world. There has been new
addition of modern armamentarium in the field of genito-urinary
surgery during last decade. Minimal invasive techniques in
urology have revolutionized the patient's management.
Faisalabad is the 3rd biggest city of Pakistan. Keeping in view
the dire need of the specialty in the region, the Department of
Urology was established at PMC/Allied Hospital in April, 1999.
The
Urology Section is headed by Prof. Zahid Iqbal. This department
is recognized for FCPS training by the College of Physicians &
Surgeons Pakistan and for MS training by University of Health
Sciences Lahore. Two candidates from the department have
qualified FCPS in urology last year.

At the
moment, the Department of Urology consists of a 30 bedded unit.
It caters four Endo-Urology, reconstructive surgery, open
urological surgery and renal transplantation. The average
patient load is as under:
1.0ut
Patient Department (OPD):
Twice/week. Annual turn over is 7540.
2.
Surgical Procedures/Year:
14200
(includes 12 renal transplantation)
3.
Admission Ratio of Patients:
Average
bed occupancy ratio is 97%
Radical
retropubic prostectomy, the first in Punjab was performed in
this department last year.
30 radical
cystectomies in last five years were also a credit to this unit.
PCNL, another milestone, although
in infancy
in this department, is probably the first institute in public
sector after SUIT in Pakistan where this minimal invasive
facility is available for kidney stones.
In near future, the Department intends to establish lithotripsy
section, ultrasound facility, per-cutaneous & laparoscopic
urology sections & ultimately indoor/out door/emergency &
theatre facilities under one roof.
This is second workshop on PCNL being arranged by this
department in the last two years.
