5TH UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH COMPETITION
SCOPE
has always been a part of events projecting and endorsing the
significance of development in the field of medical education. So
this time SCOPE had the privilege of hosting the prestigious
5TH UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH COMPETITION organized by
Pakistan Medical Research Centre on 15th march 2011
under the dynamic administration of the principal Punjab Medical
College and chief patron of SCOPE Prof. Dr. Riaz Hussain Dub.
Identifying the big picture concept of the event students
participated unconditionally in the research competition
displaying their enthusiasm and fervor in this new culture of
research.
The event commenced
with the name of Allah and then began a succession of astounding
researches that captivated the attention of the audience by the
intricate blend of talent, education and uphill struggle of all
the contenders. The judging panel consisted of the guest of honour
Dr. A. G.
Rehan and
director of medical education Dr. Musarrat ul Hasnain. The
whole event was intelligently and astutely supervised by Miss
Ghazala. The IT incharge Miss Aiman Bukhari brilliantly supervised
the presentations and multimedia settings.
First came Ayesha
Ayub from final year to present her research on the Appraisal
of medical services of rescue 1122 at emergency ward Allied
Hospital Faisalabad under the supervision of Dr. Mohammad
Anwer Sulehri. The research team consisted of Anam javed, Ayesha
Ayub, Afifa Saadia, Syeda Adeela Abid Bukhari, Sidrah Yousaf,
Taibba abbas and Tayyab Fatimah. The research beautifully captured
the true essence of the outlook of a normal person towards the
contribution of Rescue 1122 in provision of medical aid in times
of emergency. The presentation concluded with some recommendations
to make the availability of better medical services possible.
After that Mehwish
Zulfiqar was invited on stage to deliver her presentation on the
research of Prevalence of asthma and its determinants in the
students Punjab Medical College that was supervised by Dr.
Riaz Hussain of Pharmacology department. The research team
consisted of ammarah shehzad, Mehwish Zulfiqar, Noor Fatimah Tahir,
Saadia Zafar, Sana amjad and Naseem Fatimah. The research was
actually a scientific test of the hypothesis raised by the
contestants that prevalence of asthma is more common in people
with background history and exposed to different allergens.
Then Amna Rasool
was called on stage to present her research on Prevalence of
Diabetes Mellitus in high and low socio-economic class of age
group above 30 years that was performed under the supervision
of Dr. Farida Manzoor from the department of Community Medicine.
The research team included Amna Rasool, Fatima Hanif, Naila Gul
and Samreen Aslam. The research truly depicted the lack of
awareness of diabetes among the low class in particular that are
more prone to the complications of diabetes.
Amna Tariq from final year of batch 2005-2010 gave a spectacular
presentation on the assessment of awareness of obesity and
hypertension with ischemic heart disease supervised by Dr.
Humayun Chaudhary of Community medicine. Aiza sarwar, Arshi arif,
Ayesha ashfaq, Amna Zafar and Sidra Saeed also joined Amna tariq
in the research
that was based on
gathering observable,
empirical
and
measurable
evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. The research
served a step towards understanding the importance of awareness of
association of obesity and hypertension with ischemic heart
disease.
A
miraculous skit was performed by the students of third year that
reflected the problems students usually face during research so
that the information needed is not available for scrutiny by the
researchers and renders them unable to refine the accuracy and
precision of their research.
Fatimah Khalid along with her team of Sadia Chatha, Faiza Faqir
Ali, Ammara Zia and Saira Khalid presented her research on
lifestyle of old citizens in different districts on Punjab
that was supervised by Dr. Farida Manzoor. The research centered
on the objective of developing a relation between the life style
of old citizens and their health.
Shazia Mehreen
gave a presentation on her research on the study of risk
factors of hepatitis C in blood donors coming to blood back of
Allied Hospital supervised by Dr. Farida Manzoor. The team
consisted of Shazia Mehreen, Shehla Tabassum, Shumaila Ashraf,
Sidra Akram, Sana Akhtar Ansari and Memoona Maqbool. The careful
study revealed the risk of Hepatitis C that is often neglected due
to lack of awareness among the public and the only way out is by
propagating the information among the people.
Mohammad Usman,
Maarfa Rani, Ahmad Usman, Mehwish Khan Abdali, Mohammad Zain and
Hassan Sattar gave a tremendous presentation on their research on
Exploration of reasons leading the youngsters to smoke. The
research was performed under the dynamic supervision of Prod. Dr.
Ahmad Bilal from the Medical unit 2. The thought provoking
results showed how peer pressure and a search for relaxation can
incline a student to get indulged in this horrific habit despite
having information about the adverse effects.
Rasti Saleem along
with her team of Saba Tariq, Hira Tariq, Alina Ahmed and Munaza
Nisar presented their research on the study of achieving the
millennium development goal no. 4 (reduce child mortality) and
goal no. 5 (improve maternal health) in two districts of north and
south of Punjab supervised by Dr. M. Anwer Sulehri.
The systematic,
careful collection of measurements or counts of relevant
information demonstrated that the major factor contributing to the
increased mortality rate is the lack of education of public
especially the mothers.
Then Irfan yasin was
called on stage to give his presentation on the Dermatologyphic
study of PMC students under the supervision of Dr. Imitaz
Ahmad of Anatomy department. The research team included Ammar
iqbal, Irfan Yasin and Hafiz Hassan. It was beyond conviction a
research on the most interesting and new topic that is the
different finger print patterns and their signficance.
Ali Farahe,
Abdullah Bin Zahid, Haseeb Akram, Arsalan Ather, Mehr Mohammad
Usman and Mohammad Umar Farooq gave a phenomenal presentation on
their research of Practice of informed patient consent and
informational care in Allied Hospital supervised by Dr. M.
Anwer Sulehri. The results showed the importance of informed
patient consent and informational care in eradicating the usual
problems faced by doctors.
Nehdia Ashraf from
2nd year MBBS was the youngest contestant of the
undergraduate youth competition who marvelously delivered her
presentation on response of hepatitis B vaccine in relation to
age and gender supervised by Prof. Dr. M. Ashraf of
biochemistry department. The research team consisted of Nahdia
Ashraf, Iqra Qamar, Jaweria Khan, Jannat saleemi, Pulvisha Khan,
Ali Raza, Faiq Abdullah and Hashir Amin Malik. The research
was the outcome of
the experiment in the laboratory setting of PMC and by the
observation of an immunity phenomenon in nature which made the
fact clear that different age groups respond to the vaccine in
different manner creating new scope for education in this aspect.
The result was
announced after the head to head competition by the Guest of Honor
Prof. Dr. A. G. Rehan.

The research
competition ended with distribution of shields and certificated to
the deserving students. Shield was also given to the guest of
honor Dr. A. G. Rehan as a token of appreciation by the principal
Prof. Dr. Riaz Hussain Dub. Later refreshments were served and the
whole event left an optimistic impact on the students that will
impinge on their lives in a better way.
