INTRODUCTION
Pakistan Medical Research Centre is an autonomous research
organization existing for over four decades, striving to
undertake its major functions of promoting, organizing and
coordinating health research in the country. The council with
its Head Office at Islamabad has established 13 research centres
in the public sector medical institutions. It has been assumed
that the major health research capacity lies in those
institutions, and that by assisting and facilitating their
health research efforts the council will fulfill its objectives
of establishing the role of knowledge in improving the health
status of people of Pakistan.

Objectives :
.
Conduct of clinico-medical research on priority national health
problems.
. Capacity
building of potential researchers both at postgraduate and
undergraduate level, and faculty members by conducting lectures
and research methodology workshops.
. One to
one assistance to researchers in research proposals development,
execution and dissertation/research report writing furnishing
the following facilities:
a.
Library services:
assorted local journals/periodicals are available in the
centre’s library.
b.
Laboratory
facilities: some
equipment can be provided on location, to the researchers for
the execution of research work.
c.
A PMRC research
grant upto Rs.200000/- is available for the researchers against
their research proposals to be submitted for approval of the
funding agency.
d.
A Research
Project Proforma is available on PMRC website
www.pmrc.gov for the
researchers interested in submitting their research projects to
PMRC for funding.

LOCAL
ADVISORY COMMITTEE (LAC)
The
functions of centre are guided upon by a local advisory
committee (LAC). It is composed of senior academic members of
the institution, learned professors of the research field and
heads of sister research organizations. It meets periodically to
discuss resolve research problems of the centre.
ROLE OF PMRC
CENTRE IN INSTITUTIONAL ETHICAL REVIEW COMMITTEE (IERC)
The
secretariat of IERC has been established in the PMRC research
centre. All research protocols of FCPS, clinical trials and
other research projects cannot be initiated unless clearance is
sought from IERC. An Ethical Review Committee Application Form
designed by the PMRC Research Centre is available on the PMC
website for the facility of researchers. Last year, 4 research
proposals have been given clearance, whereas others are still in
progress.
The
researchers are directed to send their research protocols for
ethical consideration to the IERC from where clearance
certificate will be issued. PMC website may be visited for
further details.
ROLE OF PMRC
CENTRE IN INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH COMMITTEE (IRC)
An
institutional research committee (IRC) is existing in the
institution aimed to inculcate research culture in the
institution. It is composed of 3 senior professors of the
institution. The PMRC Research Centre occupies a key role in the
functioning of Institutional Research Committee. Ghazala
Mohyuddin Arain, Centre Incharge is acting as Co-ordinator of
the Committee; whereas, Dr. Syed Jawwad Husain, Senior Research
Officer is amongst the members. The PMRC Research Centre has
designed a Project Proposal Proforma for the researchers, and
has been made available on the Punjab Medical College website
that can be visited for further details.
The
IRC organized 2 research methodology workshops in the year 2008
to impart technical know-how for research in the intending
researchers of the institution. Ghazala Mohyuddin Arain,
Principal Research Officer (Co-ordinator) and Dr. Syed Jawwad
Husain, Senior Research Officer delivered their presentations on
‘Research Proposal Writing’ and ‘Statistical Techniques in
Medical Research’, respectively. The senior doctores of Punjab
Medical College and Allied/DHQ Hospitals participated in the
workshops with their research projects, to have hands-on session
of proposal writing.
As a
result of workshops, the IRC had the privilege to recommend the
following research projects of senior doctors of the institution
sanctioning a budget of about 56 lacs out of the Institutional
Research Fund:
