Department
of Ophthalmology was established in 1977 in DHQ Hospital,
Faisalabad and then shifted to Allied Hospital, Faisalabad and
then shifted to Allied Hospital, Faisalabad in 1996. It remained
under the headship of Prof. Dr. Riaz Ahmad Mahju and Dr.
Zia-ud-Din Ahmad and now it is under the headship of Prof. Dr.
Muhammad Sultan.
It is 54
bedded indoor department with a busy OPD and Operation Theatre.
A state of the art Diagnostic and Research Center with latest
Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Teaching facilities has been
established in March 2008.
The
department has produced up till now 16 FCPS / FRCS, 30 DOMS and
25 MCPS in Ophtalmology. A structured training schedule for the
undergraduate and post-graduate students is in practice in the
department. The department is running a training module for the
opthalmic paramedical staff in collaboration with Allama Iqbal
Open University Islamabad. The Ophthalmology Department Punjab
Medical College is the only teaching and tertiary referral
center in the region on central Punjab. It covers the population
of 15 million of Faisalabad and Sargodha division.

A large
number of the patients from region are being diagnosed, treated
and operated upon by the highly skilled personal of the
Department and it is increasing day by day. It is the only
referral centre for Medico legal cases and for Medical board.

"Strengthening the
Eye Department" |
Two years back a project was launched to upgrade
this dept. under “strengthening the eye
department” program, which was approved by Govt. of Punjab.

A new Air
conditioned classroom/ study room has been established
-
A new well
furnished library is also there now.

Fluorescent fundus
angiogram, only the second machine of its type in Punjab, is now present in
this department and it costs around Rs. 20 million. FFA is done free of cost
which otherwise costs Rs. 5,000
-
Ward, OPD and O.T
are now being monitored by closed circuit cameras.

Multimedia and
laptops are also provided

Air conditioning of
ward and O.T has been ensured to maintain an optimum temperature for the
working of machines. UPS has been provided to maintain a constant supply of
electricity

OPD, OT and ward
have been linked with telephone intercom service and internet
-
YAG-Laser, auto
refractometer, A-R Keratometer, orthoptics. These facilities are also
present in the dept. now
-
A big TV linked
with cameras in the machines is present in OPD and OT to make it convenient
for the students to pick findings in patients which were nearly impossible
before.
