Department of clinical oncology Punjab Medical College was established in 1996. this Department caters the need of cancer patients from Faisalabad, Sargodha divisions and of Lahore division. Department has got the facility of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and palliative care. This is 60 bedded indoor unit and 12 bedded day care unit. Workload of the department has increased tremendously since its beginning in 1996. the increase in number of patients annually in 1996 and in 2006 is OPD (1027 to 10115) Indoor (133 to 3480) Tumor Registration (260 to 1219) Radiotherapy (2119 to 11203) Radiation Field (4243 to 25916) Chemotherapy (811 to 4844) respectively. In 1996 department has been strengthened by installation of new equipment. i.e. new cobalt 60 Teletherapy unit, simulator and treatment planning system worth Rs. 60 million given by Govt. of the Punjab. New building for the equipment has been made by phlinthropist costing Rs. 7 million, Department is headed by Professor Dr. Syed Ijaz Hussain Shah  and his team Dr. Muhammad Khalid Assistant Professor, Dr. Muhammad Tahir SMa, Dr. Abdul Qayyum Akhtar, Dr. Muhammad Younus, Dr. Muhammad Jamil Registrar, Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Ali Admin Registrar.

Department is also involved in research in collaboration with cancer research group of Pakistan and has completed lour research protocols and three on going studies. Paper from department has been presented in 2004 at International cancer meeting in Cairo, Egypt and in ESMO, Vienna. It is honor for the department that this year in 1996 at American society of clinical oncology (ASCO) meeting, research study by Dr. Syed Ijaz Hussain Shah was published.

This department is involved in International Cancer Research project on Carcinoma of Lung Study BIE-MC-JHQZ on Asia Pacific region.

A phase-II study of locally advanced cancer of Head & Neck is being conducted in collaboration with Cancer Research Group of Pakistan.

Research protocols on Brain Tumor and Eudvsisin cancer chemotherapy are going on.
