REPORT OF PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
April 24, 2008 - August 31, 2008
Introduction:
Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad is catering for Healthcare
and training services for a wide area of Pakistan. Much of the
draining area is underserved in many respects due to poor
infrastructure and low literacy rate. There is heightened demand
of dedication and community oriented education and training.
University of Health Sciences is trying to transform the whole
educational system in Punjab to bring it at par with the rest of
the world. Departments of Medical Education are now becoming
essential requirement for all the Medical Schools and so is
being emphasized by the University. In an attempt to start these
activites in the Medical Colleges affiliated with the UHS, a
special program for training of Master trainers was started and
a series of workshops were conducted at UHS. An instruction was
passed on to the colleges for establishment of formal Medical
Education Departments. Professor Dr. Asghar Ali Randawa,
Prinicipal Punjab Medical College took the initiative and a
committee was formed to start the Department. This committee was
headed by Professor Dr. Riaz Hussain Dab, Head of Surgical
Department and comprised two members, Dr. Khuram Suhail Raja and
Dr. Imtiaz Ahmad Dogar being master trainers. The committee
conducted workshops and started looking for a qualified Medical
Educationist to provide exclusive services for the Department as
Director. Dr. Musarrat ul Hasnain was approached, who, had
successfully completed DCPS-HPE, Advance Diploma in HPE (AKU)
and working on his MHPE from Aga Khan University. Prof. Randhawa
approached Health Department Punjab and got Dr. Musarrat
transferred to Punjab Medical College. The Department started
with these members and necessary steps are being taken to
conform it to the expectations of the stakeholders and target
learners. The beginning work has been encouraging and it was
decided to document the activities in a report after every year.
The first report is being released after initial four months to
furnish a landmark for the activities of the department.
Foundation Works:
-
We have defined Vision, Mission, Goals and Objectives
of the department of Medical Education.

A Departmental Faculty has been established, which,
includes interested faculty members from other departments.
They will have joint appointments. There are other resource
persons working in Govt. and Private sectors, who have joined
a honorary faculty to contribute in teaching programs of DME.

We are in the process of installing a Curriculum Committee
working for the improvement of the curriculum.

Basic resource requirements are
being completed. The Principal is very supportive in this
context.

Proposals, PC1 and SNEs are being
prepared for Formal sanction of Medical Education
Departments along with creating of posts by the Health
Department Punjab.

Need assessment to identify the
gaps in knowledge and skills of faculty has been carried by
informal discussions with the faculty, administration and
students.

This workshop was
organized as part of DME’s Faculty Training Program considering

The workshop was
inaugurated by Prof. Asghar Ali Randhawa, Principal, Punjab
Medical College. In his address he stressed the need for more
research projects in the institution and appreciated the
interest of faculty members as evidenced by their attendance. He
promised to extend full support to the DME and other departments
for educational actitivities.
Prof. Riaz Hussain
Dab, Head of Surgical Department observed the first day session
and gave his valuable suggestions at the conclusion of first
day. He advised that the workshop should have more components of
exercises and actual practice of different steps of research be
included.. Prof. Rukhsana Majid explained that due to the short
available time it was not possible to enhance the duration of
time for exercising the steps, however this will be taken care
of in longer workshop next time. The workshop ended at 2:00 pm
on 27th July,08. Certificates were distributed by
Prof. Rukhsana Majid.
After feedback of the
participants it was decided that another workshop will be
arranged in the current year with same group. Therefore a second
workshop with same participants will be held before end of this
year. This will be of five days duration. Reading material will
be given in advance with a request that the participants will
come up with there projects and these projects will be discussed
in the workshop. For the remaining interested faculty members
another series of the same workshop will be organized.
DME is also planning
short courses of Basic Concepts in research methodology and
Biostatistics.

2. EMED gave full
support in organizing the workshop. Prof. Ahmed Bilal and Dr.
Khurram Raja gave an all out support from scratch to full
development of the project. This included arranging for sponsor
also.
3. Dr. Muhammad
Khalid Akhter, Head of Anatomy remained the pivotal person in
arranging the venue, transport, messing and accommodation.
4. Dr. Asghar Butt,
Regional Director, CPSP allowed the use of workshop room and Dr.
Shahbaz, Regional Manager facilitated the arrangements.
5. Dr. Habib Aslam
Gaba provided the audio visual recording of the events.
6. Miss Amen Bukhari,
System Administrator Computer Lab completed the paperwork and
supervised the registration process.
7. Neuvic Pharma
sponsored the Airfare for the facilitator and provided the
files.
Workshop on Communication Skills:
A workshop on communication skills was conducted in CPC Room
from 25th to 26th August, 2008. Dr. Aziz
ur Rab (A facilitator for CPSP workshops) facilitated this
program. Forty participants attended the workshops. They include
good mix of senior, middle and junior level doctors. Nominations
exceeded 80 so another workshops of remaining persons will be
conducted in few months time.
Upcoming Workshops:
The Department has started working on Curriculum Development.
Three workshops have been arranged on Integration, PBL
facilitator training and MCQ development from 7th to
16th October, 2008. Professor Dr. Alam Sher Malik,
Prof. of Paediatrics/Assistant Dean (Education) University Mara
Technology, Malaysia has very kindly consented to be the main
facilitator.
Capacity Building Courses:
In the light of need assessment, our Department has planned two
courses:

Computer
Skills Course.
This will bridge the gap of computer skills. A questionnaire
has been sent to the faculty members for assessing the current
computer skill and this will determine the final content of
the course. Meanwhile, a pilot course has been started having
two one hours sessions in a week. Nine senior faculty members
are participating in this program and they have termed it very
useful. Next course will be started after having feedback from
the present participants.

Research
Methodology and Biostatics Course.
The Department is making an effort to arrange for resource
persons for starting this course. Some experts have been
contacted and the terms are being discussed. This will take
start in few months time.
Collaboration:
It has been decided to initiate and establish strong
collaboration with the University of Health Sciences and
Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. Collaboration will be
sought at International level as well. Prof. Dr. Riaz Hussain,
Head of Surgical Department and Dr. Musarrat ul Hasnain,
Director, DME are going to attend International Congress on
“Implementation of WFME standards in curricula of Undergraduate
Medical Education” at Kish Island Iran in Nov,2008.
