LITERARY WEEK 2009

It has been a tradition of Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad to celebrate literary week every year. And keeping up the tradition, this year literary week was celebrated in 14th, 15th and 16th of April 2009. Prior to this the office bearers of the literary and debating society were selected. The interviews were conducted in Pathology Dept. by Prof Dr. Janbaz Ahmed and other executive members of the literary society. Shadab Masood (Final Yr) was selected as the General Secretary and other members were also selected. The society members started working actively and their efforts proved fruitful which can well be seen in the form of this well-organized function.

 

Day 1        Qirat and Naat                               April 14, 2009

       

The function started at 11.00 am sharp in the college auditorium with the arrival of the chief guest Prof Dr. Hafiz Imtiaz (Head of Anatomy Dept.) and Guest of Honor Mr. M. Zakir-ul-Hashmi. The organizers for the event were Dr. Khalid Mehmud and Dr. Rai Mansab Ali. The formal start of the function was done by the welcome note by Ghulam Shabbir and Irum Shehzadi. The recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafiz Husnain was followed by Naat by Lubna Rafique. General Secretary, Shadab Masood was invited on the stage for his opening address to the guests and the audience. After that Secretary Qirat Section, Istikhar Ali took over and invited the first participant of the Husn-e-Qirat Competition on the stage. There was a total of 11 participants, 2 from each class and 1 from First yr BDS. The participants recited verses from the Holy Quran in their beautiful voices. The audience was deeply involved and there was pin-drop silence in the auditorium. After all the participants had recited verses from the Holy Quran, the judges were invited on the stage and were presented souvenirs by the Chief Guest and Chief Guest was presented the souvenir by Chairman Literary Society, Prof Dr. Janbaz Ahmed.

Finally, the judges announced the results and with this the Husn-e-Qirat Competition came to an end.

The next competition was that of Naat. There was a total of 11 participants. The stage was conducted by Secretary Naat, Ms. Anila Mumtaz who called the participants on the stage to give tribute to our beloved prophet PBUH. The Chief Guest of the event was Prof Dr. Ahmed Saeed (Head of Forensic Medicine Dept.). After all the participants had paid homage to the Holy Prophet PBUH in their unique styles, the judges were presented souvenirs by the worthy Chief Guest. The Chief Guest was also presented a shield by the Chairman Literary Society. The judges then announced the results. Finally the audience enjoyed refreshments and the judges and guests were taken to Pathology Dept. for refreshments.

In this way, the first day of the literary week came to an end and left special memories in our hearts.

Day 2            Debates                                     April 15, 2009

              

The function started at 11.00 am as announced under the supervision of Dr. Imtiaz Dogar and Dr. Ijaz Shah. The college auditorium was packed to the full even before the function started. The Chief Guest for Urdu Debates was Prof Dr. M. Ali Tirmizi (Head Of ENT Unit 2) and the guest of honour for the debates event was Prof. M. Yunus Jilani, a renowned poet and scholar of Faisalabad City. The function inaugurated with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafiz Zaman and Naat by Fakhar Hayat. This was followed by the welcome address by the General Secretay, Shadab Masood. The stage was then handed over to the Secretary Urdu Section, Taimur Khan who called the participants. The participants were very well-prepared and captivated the audience with their unique styles and forceful arguments. The participants spoke both in favour of and against the topic. After all the participants had presented their arguments over the topic, the judges were called on stage to announce the results and were presented souvenirs by the worth Chief Guest. The Chief Guest also received a shield from the Chairman Literary and Debating Society. At the end, a resolution was passed based upon the audience poll and it was decided against the topic.

The next Debates were in English. For that, Deputy Secretaries English Section Farhan and Mehreen took over the stage. The topic for the day was “Men have failed, let the women take over” The participants spoke both in favour of and against the topic and were deeply applauded by the audience. The Chief Guest for the event was Prof Dr. Yusuf Shah (Head Of Surgical Unit-2). Again in English Debates, the participants were very well prepared and succeeded in grabbing the audience’s attention completely. At the end, the judges were presented souvenirs along with the chief guest. Finally a resolution was passed based on the audience’s opinion against the motion.

After the English Debates came the turn of Punjabi Debates and as expected, the Punjabi speakers were deeply applauded by the audience and the guests. The Secretary Punjabi Section Ms Sajida Perveen conducted the stage and called on the 11 participants who spoke on both sides of the motion. For Punjabi Debates, the chief guest was Prof Dr. Raza Baloch (Head of Pediatrics Dept.) who later presented souvenirs to the judges.

In the end, the audience was served refreshments in the hall and the respectable guests and judges were taken to the Pathology Dept. for tea. This concluded what proved to be a great entertaining and thought-provoking function, one which most of us will never be able to forget.

 

Day 3   Mushaira & Prize Distribution           April 16, 2009

                  

The third day of the function was relatively special as it was blessed with the arrival of Chief Guest Principal PMC, Prof Dr. Riaz Hussain Dab and by the Guest Of Honor, Mr. Amjad Islam Amjad. Before the function, the audience was served lunch. The function was scheduled to start at 03.00 pm and started as scheduled. The organizers for Mushaira were Prof Dr. Asghar Butt and Dr. Zafar Hussain. The arrival of the Guests of Honour, Amjad Islam Amjad and Mr. Shaukat Fehmi was warmly appreciated by the audience who turned up in great numbers and the guests received a standing applause by the audience on their arrival. The function started with Recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafiz M Yasin and Naat by Huriya Asghar. The General Secretary, Shadab Masood opened the function by his welcome note and a few verses of poetry. The stage was then handed over to Secretary Mushaira, Mr. Shahid Iqbal who invited the participants on stage. The young poets of Punjab Medical College grabbed the audience’s attention and presented their pieces of poetry in the form of Nazm and Ghazal. The level of poetical talent in PMC was greatly appreciated by the guests and the Principal PMC, Prof Dr Riaz Hussain Dab. The function was attended by various scholars and poets of Faisalabad City which included Mr Hamid Shakir, Prof Riaz Qadri Ahmed Shahbaz Khawar and Dr. Muhsin Maghiana. At the end of the Mushaira, our worthy guests also recited few of their own poetical verses. Of special interest to the audience were the verses from Mr. Shaukat Fehmi, Chairman Literary Society, Prof Dr. Janbaz Ahmed and Guest Of Honour, Mr. Amjad Islam Amjad.

After the mushaira, there was a prize distribution ceremony which was conducted by Dr. Najaf Imtiaz Gill. All the winners and office bearers of the society were awarded shields and certificates to honor their achievements. At the end General Secretary, Literary and Debating Society, Shadab Masood thanked all the participants and his team members acknowledging all the credit of the function to his team and the chairman, Prof Dr Janbaz Ahmed without whose support the event wouldn’t have been such a great success. Prof Dr. Janbaz Ahmed then thanked all the audience and the executice members for their continuous support. The principal Punjab Medical College, Prof Dr. Riaz Hussain Dab also expressed his satisfaction over the event and expressed his hope that such events be continued in the future. The CLASS TROPHY was won by 2nd Yr students who expressed their happiness by hooting. At the end the audience was given refreshments and the office bearers along with the guests were served tea in the pathology deptt.
