Department of Clinical Oncology Punjab Medical College Allied Hospital Faisalabad successfully hosted 12th Cancer congress ONCO 2005 under the auspices of Clinical Society of Pakistan at Faisalabad Serena Hotel on December 16-18, 2005. Dr. Syed Ijaz Hussain Shah Head of Department of Clinical Oncology was chairman organizing committee and Dr. Muhammad Khalid was organizing secretary. Congress was well attended by eminent oncologist from all over the country. Oncologist from USA, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Middle East and India also graced the occasion. Congress was inaugurated by Dr. Tahir Ali Javed Health Minister Govt. of Punjab. Dr. Ijaz Hussain Shah in his speech thank the Health Minister for giving funds worth Rs. 60 Million for up gradation of Oncology department PMC Faisalabad and demanded for liner accelerator and Gamma Knife for the department. Professor A.G. Rehan Principal PMC in his address appreciated the efforts of the department in treating malignant patients despite the meager resources and promised that he will leave no stone unturned in helping the department for its up gradation Minister for Health Dr. Tahir Ali Javed said that Govt. is aware with problems of the cancer patients and is establishing comprehensive cancer institute at Lahore initially, and what so ever the help is needed by department of clinical oncology Govt. is ready to fulfill the demands. Minister applauded philanthropist of Faisalabad and presented shields to Dr. Fawad Ahmad Chairman I.H.O. for donation of medicines worth Rs. 10 million to cancer patients and Mr. Tariq Habib for constructing of radiation room worth Rs. 7 million in the department. During the congress 14 state of the art lectures beside Professor S.M Masood and Dr. Shams uz Zaman Memorial lectures were presented Dr. Sanjay Sharma emphasis the need of Radical surgery in stomach cancer. Dr. Tariq Mughal from (USA) gave hope for multiple Myeloma and C.M.L. patients by discussing the modern trends. Dr. Faisal Mahmood from (France) and Professor J. Cassidy discuss the advance in chemotherapy of colorectal cancers. Dr. Shaista Khan (AKU), Dr. Lale Atahan (Turkey), Professor Matti S. Apro stress the need of multimodality treatment in breast cancer. Professor Tariq Siddiqui (USA) gave thought provoking talk on management of soft tissue sarcoma. There was poster presentation during the congress in first and second prizes were won by Dr. Amer Lal (AKU) and third prize went to Dr. Noor Muhammad Somroo Civil Hospital Karachi. In the concluding session Rana Zahid Tuseef City District Nazim Faisalabad showed his concerned and promised that city Govt. will help in the up gradation of oncology department Allied Hospital Faisalabad. |
