De
The
Cardiology Department of Allied Hospital, Punjab Medical College
Faisalabad comprising of CCU and Cardiology Ward. This unit was
established initially as a 10 bedded CCU in 1986. This unit was
extended to a capacity of 39 beds with 24 bedded CCU and 15
bedded cardiology ward. Presently, Unit is working under the
supervision of Prof. Dr. Abdul Hafeez Ch. Other Faculty members
include Dr. Liaqat Ali (Assistant Professor), Dr. Yousaf Hassan
Khan (Senior Registrar) and Dr. Zail Ullah Sail (Senior
Registrar). A team of 18-20 dedicated doctors including (Post
Graduates + House Officers) are working in the ward day and
night for patients welfare and their better management. Post
Graduate trainees some on rotation from Medical ward to fulfill
their FCPS-II training.
This unit
is a tertiary care unit catering for large population (7.5
million) of Faisalabad and vast catchment area including
districts of Jhang, Toba Tek Sing and Sargodha etc. Average
patient turnover is very high with a monthly admission of
400-450 patients (OPD / Emergency). Number of TMP insertions is
02-03 per day. Burden of OPD is huge amounting to 100 patients
per OPD with the four days of OPD per week. 04-05 ETTs are
performed daily. About 05 patients are thrombolysed for acute
myocardial infarction every day.
Unit is
suffering from shortage of staff as two posts of Associate
Professors and three regular Medical Officers are lying vacant.
We do not have a designated cardiology ward for the last 15
years. We admit the patients in a private ward which is away
from main CCU and the patients have to face lot of problems
during transferring. Sometimes any mishap can happen.

Facilities
available presently are EGG, bed said monitoring, thrombolysis
and ETT. TMPs are being inserted blindly which is against the
international norms. We need Echocardiography machine,
Fluoroscope and Holter monitor. For TMP and PPM insertion,
fluoroscope (C Arm) is required on urgent basis. Finally, to
make this unit a proper tertiary care unit, we need an
Angiography Machine as early as possible.
There are 12 beds in CCU
whit all the monitoring facilities. Two to three temporary pacemakers
are implanted daily & 1-2 permanent pace makers are placed
monthly on average.
Thrombolytic therapy has now been very
well established.
4-beded, emergency room
with monitoring and resuscitation facilities has established in CCU.
14 beds have been made
available recently for the stable patients.
Faisalabad is the second
city of Punjab after Lahore where PPM are being implanted. First
PPM was implanted in sep.1999, since then 24 patients of complete
heart block are treated successfully by PPM implantation.
Very recently first internal
cardiac defibrillator (ICD) of Punjab is implanted by the joint
venture of cardiology Depts. of Allied Hospital Faisalabad and
mayo hospital Lahore.
1) Echocardiography
2) ETT
3) Thallium studies and
ETT at PIUM under supervision of cardiology Department.
4) A bedside mobile X-ray unit.
5) A fully operation Fluoroscopy Unit.
This unit providing almost
all the facilities short of angiographies and Cardiac Surgery
for which patients are referred to PIC LAHORE or AFIC RAWILPINDI.
Efforts are being made to establish a second CCU with CATH LAB
and Cardiac surgery Theaters. Building plans for these have been
prepared by chief architect and submitted for approval.
Prof. Dr. Abdul
Hafeez Ch. along with his team are trying
best to develop this
unit at par with the best unit in the country. May Allah bless
us in all our future endeavors to cater the need for this thickly
populated area or the country.
