INDEPENDENT OR NOT?!?
By: Atiqa
Mahmood (4th Year)
As the
month of August dawns in, the atmosphere is filled with
patriotism and nationalism. Everyone exhibits an air of zeal and
zests as the very day of our independence draws near. There is
one drawback to this that the entire constructive and positive
attitude seems to evaporate the very next day of 14th
August. The pain, helplessness and hopelessness all comes back
with full swing.
The true
purpose of this day and its significance has been long forgotten
and instead it has turned into a mere public holiday. A holiday
which we celebrate with all our energy but don’t understand the
soul of. Functions are organized, seminars are arranged and live
television broadcasts are given. Thousands of things are said
and hundreds promised but in actual, nothing is done. Its all
talk and no work. Everyone talks about the sacrifices our
fore-fathers made but no-one talks about the intend of their
actions and their dreams. They gave up their present to secure
an independent and flourishing future of their up-coming
generations. We the present generation was supposed to be living
their dreams but that does not seem the matter. Nothing actual
matters to us, as long as we have our cell-phones, internet,
cable network and fast food; a sad but true reality!!!
Criticizing the society and system is a new thing these days.
Everyone thinks its moral obligation to talk bad of any
short-comings they see in the society. There is one thing I
don’t understand which is that the society is just the way we
have all made it, then why is everyone complaining. If it’s such
a big problem they can’t stop talking about, then why don’t they
do something about it? We all helped in making this mess and it
won’t clear up until and unless we all pitch in.
Complaining is may be the best thing we Pakistanis do but I
don’t blame any-one. Harsh situation and surroundings
precipitate such behavior. One thing I do blame our nation is
for not taking an initiative at our own level. A change in
attitude is all we need. We need to stop blindly arguing to
matters and start understanding the national matters wisely for
the betterment of the society. Everyone is waiting for the 1st
brick to be laid. Let’s finish the wait and start the building,
building of the society our fore-fathers long dreamt of.
Our youth
thinks it has no future in Pakistan,
their life is doomed here. The same Pakistan
which provided them shelter, home and warmth. The very same
country, whose colleges and universities accepted them with its
arms wide open, is just not safe and fit for them now. Pakistan
which gave them their social status and position has no right to
demand a service in return. This seems like an unfair deal. Does
our own soil not deserve our blood and sweat after all it has
done for us???
Our youth
has to realize their responsibility and play their part in
stabilizing the society with their talent and young blood.
Our common
man has been blindly following its leaders, half a century now.
They accept any regulation or sanction placed upon them as
though the common man has eventually turned numb. The hopes of
the common man have been shattered so many times that he is in a
state of denial and senselessness. The common man needs to come
out of his deep slumber and realize that the situation is
getting out of control now. Only one thing can make the
difference, which is the common man, taking the reigns into his
own hands. Leaders are people who understand the need of their
nation and have clear concepts regarding where they are leading
us. All the above seems like a big lie when applied to our own
leaders and politicians, they are as confused, if not more as
the common man.
People
amongst us who have a clear and focused thinking and a sense of
leadership should come forward. The service towards their
society is much awaited and only these people can relieve the
nation from the turbulent feudalistic politics. We as a nation
need to remember realize and revitalize our basics and
fundamentals and capitalize on our good qualities as much as we
can. We all need to move forward not as singles but hand in hand
as a nation.
With
hope in our eyes and strength in our arms,
Let’s
move towards a prosperous
Pakistan!!!
