Introduction and Brief History
The Department of
Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, Punjab Medical College, aims at
providing high standards of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at
the two attached hospitals, Allied Hospital, and DHQ Hospital
Faisalabad.
In addition to
the two faculty members, the Anaesthesia Department at Allied
Hospital is staffed by six Specialists, eighteen MOs and seven
House-Officers. The Department at DHQ Hospital comprises one
Specialist, eleven MOs and two House-Officers. There are 19
Postgraduate Trainee Registrars currently registered in the
Postgraduate Training Program for FCPS/MCPS.
The Anaesthesia &
Intensive Care Department, Punjab Medical College Faisalabad was
established in 1987 with Professor Dr. Manzoor Ahmed Chaudhary
as the first Head. He continued to serve the Department till his
retirement on June 21, 1992. He was succeeded by Dr. Asghar Ali
Randhawa, who also served as Principal PMC from May 28, 2007 to
February 18, 2009. On March 3, 2009, after her predecessor’s
transfer, Dr. Mrs Robina Firdous took over as the third Head of
the Anaesthesia Department.
Dr. Mrs Robina Firdous, the incumbent Head of the Department of
Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, joined PMC in 1993 as Assistant
Professor of Anaesthesia. Before assuming as Head, her major
assignment was to supervise the Anaesthesia Department at DHQ
Hospital Faisalabad.

Postgraduate Programme
The postgraduate teaching involves the supervision of candidates
preparing for FCPS and MCPS in Anaesthesia.
The objectives are:

To conduct and supervise research projects
•
To train residents in pre-operative planning and
preparation
•
To teach end-of-case discussion
•
To teach Postoperative care and pain management
•
To teach and train intensive therapy

Undergraduate programme
The Department also organizes didactic lectures for final year
MBBS students of the PMC.
Research Projects Currently in Progress
The Department is actively involved in clinical research. The
Department encourages its faculty to enhance their skills and
knowledge and supports them to attend different medical
symposia, seminars and workshops as part of their continuing
medical education. Work on the following four research projects
is being undertaken.

“The Effects of Bispectral Index Monitoring on
Anaesthetic Use and Recovery in Children Anesthetized with
Sevoflurane in Nitrous Oxide”
2.
"Hemodynamics, End tidal CO2, Saturated Pressure of Oxygen, and
ECG changes: A comparison between Laproscopic Cholecystectomy &
Open Cholecystectomy"
3.
"Epidural Infusion versus Combined Femoral and Sciatic Nerve
Blocks for lower limb surgery: A comparison of hemodynamic
changes, pain control and muscle relaxation between two groups.
4.
"A Comparison between target controlled infusion of
Propofol versus Sevoflurane for recovery profile in paediatric
anaesthesia"
Services
The Department of Anaesthesia provides round the clock coverage
to the Emergency Operation Theatres of all specialties and the
Intensive Care Unit in the hospital. The Department also
provides cover for Elective Surgical Procedures carried out in
the following operation theatres:

Intensive Care
The 8 bedded ICU at Allied Hospital is well-staffed and
appropriately equipped. It is the only ICU in public sector in
the entire district. Patients from other districts also use this
facility.
Vision
We
are striving to create an environment that is conducive to
learning and research. We are committed to improve the patient
care and management, and to expand the existing capacity of
the ICU even with donations.
