Soon after the inception of Punjab medical college in 1973, pathology department was established in 1975 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Ch. (late) at old campus. The Department was shifted to the new campus in 1982. The department has the honor to host two national pathology conferences in 1982 & 1997, respectively. Delegates from all over the country actively participated in the proceedings of the conferences. At present Prof. Dr. Janbaz Ahmed is head of the department.

Pathology department is actively engaged in teaching 3^rd & 4^th year classes, with modern audio-visual aids. This year, first top two positions in 3^rd professional exam and 2^nd position in 2^nd professional exam (UHS) are  achieved by our students.

Pathology department also provides diagnostic facilities in the field of histopathology, cytopathology and special hematology for the patients of Allied & DHQ Hospitals and OPD’s cases as well. Last year 4500 biopsies, 1500 FNAC’s ,400 Bone Marrow aspirations reports have been delivered.

Pathology department is a continuous source of encouragement for its faculty members to acquire post graduation. Two of its members were awarded PhD while two are enrolled for Ph.D. Thirteen qualified for M.Phil while seven are enrolled for M.Phil in different sections of pathology. Moreover four members acquired MCPS and DCP. Twenty four publications in National Journals and 25 presentations in various National and international conferences are on the credit of pathology department. Members of the faculty actively participate in different workshops or seminars conducted by other institutes all over Pakistan.
